TAVARES

Tavares is a Grammy Award-winning U.S. soul, disco and R&B band that enjoyed its greatest successes in the 1970s. Between 1973 and 1983, the group scored a total of 27 hits on the American R&B charts. She's Gone (1974), It Only Takes a Minute (1975), Whodunit (1977) were at number one. Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel and More Than a Woman (1976) were other major international hits by Tavares.

Originally, the Tavares were from Cape Verde. The brothers first performed under the name Chubby and the Turnpikes in 1963. Ten years later, in 1973, they signed a record deal with Capitol Records and had their first hit with Check It Out. 1975 became the most successful year for Tavares, the album In the City reached the top 40 of the U.S. pop charts, the single It Only Takes a Minute reached number ten on the pop charts and number one on the R&B charts. Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel (1976) was a million-seller and her first major international hit (including number four in the UK, number 38 in Germany, and her only number one on the American disco charts). Remember What I Told You to Forget (1975), Don't Take Away the Music (1976), Whodunit (1977) and The Ghost of Love (1977) were other successful hits by the group, which increasingly presented itself in the disco style of the time.

Tavares then also contributed a hit to one of the most successful albums of all time, the soundtrack to the disco drama Saturday Night Fever. Their version of the Bee Gees' song More Than a Woman reached #32 on the U.S. pop charts and #7 in the U.K., and the group received their only Grammy for it.

In 2014, the group was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Tavares continues to exist as a quartet and still performs live.
