Shawn Lee about his Roland Re-501 Space Echo
“My Roland Re-501 Space Echo is a magic box!
I have used it on pretty much every recording I have done over the past 25 years or so.
It was given to me by a guy named Byron De Lear in Los Angeles back in 1990. He is now a US senator but that’s a different story!
I was working with him a lot in 89/90 and one day he took me back to his pool house saying he had a present for me... Byron handed me the space echo and said:” I know you’ll get something good out of this”. This was a very generous gift to say the least and boy has it been useful over the decades! It has one of the best slapback sounds of any unit plus that wonderful Boss/Roland chorus circuit which I have always used and loved no matter what musical fashion has said is cool at the time.
Funny how the chorus effect has again become hip and trendy in recent years! Oh well that’s show biz.
I don’t know what the future holds but I do know that my trusted Space Echo will be there by my side dubbing the shit out of it!“
